More football violence, this time in Limassol

Yet another weekend brings us incidents of football violence; this time in Tsirio stadium at the game between AEL and Apollon. The “fans” of the teams turned the place into a medieval battlefield, throwing stones, metal screws and other objects using slings resulting into two policemen and one fan being injured and taken to the hospital. Today’s events reinforced the opinion that the violence incidents have no real connection with the outcome of the match but they are pre-planned by the so called “fans”. The fights broke originally when hundreds of Apollon fans attempted to bypass the police checks for illegal possessions and enter the stadium. During the game the police had to intervene in multiple occasions to restore order and in one occasion a fan was hit by a flare and injured. Even though no arrests were made the police confiscated a large number of alcoholic drinks, and other items that were meant to be used as weapons against the police.
