According to the results of an opinion poll that was published by the Turkish newspaper Hurriyet, 64% of Turkey’s population is against the construction of nuclear power plants in Turkey. In the question whether going nuclear will help further development of Turkey only 6.6% answered positively while 86% said that they don’t want to live anywhere near a nuclear power plant. The chairwoman of Turkish Industrialists and Businessmen’s Association Ümit Boyner has expressed her concerns stating “This is not just an issue about energy. Turkey is a country of earthquakes. There are risks involved. The whole process must be tackled with all the details in sight; it must be managed more transparently. [Building nuclear plants] should not be done in a hurry,”.
