Cyprus saw a 157% increase in unemployment in the last 3 years

The number unemployed in Cyprus continues to increase according to information made public yesterday by the Statistical Services of Cyprus. 27479 were registered as unemployed in April 2011 which presents a 24.4% increase from April 2010 – within a year 5278 more people became unemployed. In April 2008 the unemployed were only 11158 (157% more today).

According to the statistical services the change is mainly in the sectors of trade, construction, accommodation & catering, education, logistics and new entrants to the labour market. The highest concentration of unemployment is seen in the professional categories of cleaners, clerical and unskilled workers. 11135 of the unemployed are secondary education graduates.
