Cyprus farming in danger from disease outbreak in occupied areas

Cyprus dairy and farming industries are in great danger if the Lumpy Skin Disease which has been confirmed to be spreading in cattle in the occupied North jumps to the government controlled areas. The European Community authorities are taking very strict measures for this disease, which so far had no cases in the EU. Experts from EU, who came to Cyprus last weekend visited contaminated units in the occupied territories, last Wednesday and yesterday held a meeting with the Veterinary Services to inform them of the situation. It was mentioned that in the event of an outbreak in the territory controlled by the Republic of Cyprus the next move would be killing of all positive animals and vaccinations; then Cyprus would be placed in quarantine for three years which would prohibit the movement of animals, the export of meat and milk and cow milk based dairy products.
