First same-sex marriages in Cyprus planned

The first same-sex weddings in Cyprus will be performed in Nicosia. The Civil Cohabitation Act which was voted by the parliament last year and has been in effect since last Monday and according to the Department of Civil Registry and Migration, there has been a lot of interest from citizens looking for information about the process, required documents and fees.  The Nicosia District Administration already booked two same-sex weddings, one later this month and another one in March.

The fees for each couple are 170 euro. The couple is required to make a sworn declaration that certifies that is has not committed a previous marriage. Then will need to get a certificate of freedom from Civil Registry and Migration Department. Finally the couple should go to the District Administration of their town of residence where they will need to complete and sign an application form stating the rights and obligations arising from the cohabitation agreement.
