Boycott the food market this Monday

The Cyprus Green Party with the support of the Cyprus Consumer Association and Quality of Life invites consumers to boycott food markets on Monday 10 January in response to the implementation of the 5% increase in VAT rate on food and medicine which is being put in effect on the same day. At the same time a symbolic event will be held in Eleftheria Square in Nicosia where bread will be sold without the extra 5% VAT rate.

The problem with this particular tax is that it is not proportional to your income and standard of living. A largest percentage out of the pockets of poor people will be taxed in this way than from the rich who could possibly offer more in tax revenue using a different approach. In my opinion this is a desperate measure to get the money from the people who have the least power rather than going after the ones who evade taxation.

So the conclusion is, better a fat goose than no goose!

This is just a way for the government to receive much needed funds due to the large scale of tax evasion in Cyprus. People have to spend their undeclared income, so the government gets it’s cut this way.
