Football games might soon not have police support

The next football matches will be held without the presence of the police if a proposal by the Cyprus Police Association is approved. Andreas Symeou, a representative of the association stated that in response to the recent incidents that took place at football matches and the injuring of 30 of their members, the leadership of the association proposed to abstain from policing any future games.

Mr Symeou specifically mentioned the incident that took place in the cup match between AEL-ARIS, where the hooligans isolated a police officer and led him into a barbed wired area, where they mercilessly beaten him with stones, sticks and whatever else was available to them.

The police, he continued,”invited every weekend to go to war”and urged the state to assume its responsibilities.
