Automated traffic cameras go on trial in Nicosia on Monday

UPDATE: The system will become fully operational on 2nd June 2014. From that date and onwards violators will be fined.

On Monday the new traffic cameras system will be put in operation on trial basis in Griva Digeni avenue in Nicosia. Warning signs about the new system and the speed limit have already been installed. The system will detect cars travelling faster than the allowed 50km/h and automatically report them to the Department of Traffic at the Police headquarters. During the trial period the local police department will inform the owners of the vehicles about their speed violations over the phone to raise awareness. After the trial period is over more locations will be added to the system and the local police departments will be issuing fines to the owners vehicles which were found breaking the speed limits. Griva Digeni avenue has been one of the most problematic areas in Nicosia, and has been regularly used as a drag racing circuit during late night hours over the past few years.
