Police phone conversation logging system to become operational on 4th of April

Speaking at a press conference, the Chief of Police Michael Papageorgiou announced that from 4th April calls made to the police call centres will be recorded. He explained that the new system will ensure faster response times by the members of the police force and better handling of the requests by the public. He stressed that the storage of the coversations is secure and that all required measures were taken to make sure that the system follows the law and does not violate the privacy of anyone involved. The recordings will not be accessible unless prior approval is given by the Chief of Police in cases where there is a valid reason to re-examine a conversation between the public and the police. In the future that the system will be extended to cover all departments and police stations where the public can have direct contact.
